Part II</p>http://www.vadstrup.dk/post/20590276261http://www.vadstrup.dk/post/20590276261Fri, 06 Apr 2012 11:10:01 -0400<img src="http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m22crfI3vQ1r2us6ao1_500.png"/><br/><br/><p>Vintage</p>http://www.vadstrup.dk/post/20590240114http://www.vadstrup.dk/post/20590240114Fri, 06 Apr 2012 11:09:15 -0400<p>I normally just post pretty pictures, but this subject has been my mind the last couple of months – So here is a little blogpost.</p> <p>Over 10 years I have been working professional with hosting of high availability web solutions – Both for agile starter companies to enterprise corporate companies.</p> <p>One key feature in all the solutions I have been working with is that all the companies track all site behavior with Google Analytics – And all of them thinks that this covers all of their data.</p> <p>As may know Google Analytics works client-side and to track a visitors behavior, the client must support java script – which then means that I cannot track other objects on website than a html page (if the client support java script)</p> <p>Google Analytics filters all the data, and represent is in a non-techie user interface, tweaked for the common man who knows something about – CPC, Conversion, Organic traffic etc.</p> <p>Typically this data is altered in a magic spreadsheet and then distributed within the company.</p> <p>My problem with this, is that because of Google Analytics the common employee does not have a general understanding about what traffic are coming to their website – Due to Google Analytics filters and are not tracking the real data</p> <p><strong>Scenario:</strong></p> <p>You have a launch page, announcing you website that are soon to launch. There is a nifty little teaser text with 6 images - Including 1 css file</p> <p>When a user hits the page from their browser Google Analytics tracks this as 1 visitor / session – and 1 hit (If the client support java-script)</p> <p>The server tracks is as 1 visitor / session – 8 hits (Html file, 6 images and 1 CSS file)</p> <p>After a month, you launch page has now been processed by different crawlers (Which does not process java-script) and you are now visible in the most popular search engines. </p> <p>Your site is getting more and more organic visitors, and you can se and average of about 50 hits pr.  Day in Google Analytics (400 hits in your server log)</p> <p>What you don’t see in Google Analytics is that 60% of all of your hits on website, is based on actual web-crawlers. Just passing by to index your site.</p> <p>So that is 640 real hits – but only displayed in Google Analytics as 50 hits. </p> <p>Google Analytics can give you the right tracking for your real user behavior – Your server log can give you the real impression about what’s is really going on. </p> <p>Think about if you site tracks 1 million hits daily in Google Analytics – How many hits would that really be on the server. The more popular your website are, the more web-crawlers will also drop by you website – actually some have estimated that 70% of all traffic on websites today are based from web crawlers.</p> <p>What is frustrating for me, is every single time you encounter a website problem where, you cannot see any trend-markings in Google Analytics, but your server-log shows a peak of 80% hits decrease – is when you need to explain the common person about the problem.
